Why spore-forming strains survive the journey
Most probiotics face the same problem: stomach acid. A live culture has to travel through a strongly acidic stomach before it reaches the gut where it can do anything useful, and many familiar strains — Lactobacillus among them — largely don't survive the trip.
Bacillus strains solve this differently. They form protective spores, a dormant, armoured state that passes through stomach acid intact and germinates once it reaches the gut. Biome Balance uses Bacillus subtilis C-3102 and Bacillus velezensis DSM 15544, both authorised gut-flora stabilisers, delivering over 525 million live cultures per serving. It's the difference between a probiotic count on a label and a probiotic count in the gut.
Where they sit in the Penta-biotic® blend
Live cultures are only one third of the job. Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria; prebiotics are the fibres that feed them; postbiotics are the useful compounds those bacteria produce. Most products do one. The Penta-biotic® blend in Biome Balance is built to do all three together.
So the Bacillus strains arrive alongside pumpkin fibre for stool quality and beta-glucans as prebiotic fuel, plus montmorillonite clay for digestive comfort. Introducing bacteria without feeding them is a common way to get less from a probiotic than you paid for.
How much to give — and when to give more
Biome Balance has two serving levels, and picking the right one matters. It's highly palatable, and can go on food or straight into the water bowl — useful when a dog is off their food but still needs the support.
- Daily maintenance: 2g up to 10kg, 3.5g for 10–25kg, 5g for 25–40kg, 7g over 40kg.
- During an upset: roughly double the maintenance serving, for 3–5 days until things settle.
- After antibiotics: the higher serving for 7–10 days to help restore gut flora.
- Through a food change: the maintenance serving across the full 7–10 day transition.
The one interaction to know about
These strains are authorised gut-flora stabilisers and are well tolerated by healthy adult dogs. There is one important exception, and it's printed on the pouch: Biome Balance should not be given at the same time as macrolide-type antibiotics, such as erythromycin or azithromycin.
That isn't a reason to avoid probiotics after antibiotics — quite the opposite, it's one of the best times to use them. It's a timing point. If your dog is on any medication, check with your vet before starting.

How long do probiotics take to work in dogs?
For an acute upset, the higher serving typically settles things over 3–5 days. For general gut health, think in weeks rather than days — a stable microbiome is built through consistency, so give it daily rather than only when there's a problem. Persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool, or a dog refusing food for over 24 hours needs a vet, not a supplement.
Can I give probiotics after a course of antibiotics?
Yes, and it's one of the most useful times to. Use the higher serving for 7–10 days after the course to help restore gut flora. The one exception is timing: don't give Biome Balance at the same time as macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin or azithromycin.
