Penta-biotic® explained: the five-part gut-health blend
19 April 2026 · Frankie & Paws
Most "probiotic" supplements do one thing: they add a handful of live bacteria to your dog's bowl and hope they survive the journey through the stomach acid to set up shop in the gut. Our Biome Balance does something different. It's a Penta-biotic® blend — five complementary pieces of the gut-health puzzle, working in the same direction at the same time.
Probiotics — the live cultures
The probiotic strain in Biome Balance is Bacillus subtilis (specifically strains C-3102 and velezensis DSM 15544), at over 525 million CFU (colony-forming units) per daily dose. We chose Bacillus strains specifically because, unlike the Lactobacillus strains common in human yoghurt, they form heat-stable and acid-stable spores — they survive room-temperature storage, travel through the stomach intact, and wake up in the small intestine where they're useful.
Prebiotics — the food for the bacteria
Probiotics without prebiotics is a bit like dropping off a new tenant without any furniture. Beta-glucans (from Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast) and fructooligosaccharides are the prebiotic fibres in Biome Balance — fermentable fibres that the beneficial bacteria feed on, outcompeting the less welcome ones.
Postbiotics — the metabolic end products
Postbiotics are the short-chain fatty acids and bioactive compounds that healthy gut bacteria produce. They're the mechanism by which a thriving microbiome actually benefits the host. The mannan-rich fraction (MRF) and beta-glucans we include provide a direct dose of these compounds rather than waiting weeks for a freshly-established microbiome to produce them on its own.
Pumpkin fibre — the soluble bulk
Pumpkin has been a vet's first-line advice for upset stomachs for decades, and for good reason. Its soluble fibre slows transit in runny tummies and loosens it up in constipated ones — an unusual property that makes it forgiving for a wide range of digestive troubles. It also happens to be highly palatable, which is half the battle with a fussy eater.
Montmorillonite clay — the gentle absorbent
Food-grade montmorillonite clay (also known as bentonite) has a negatively-charged lattice structure that binds mycotoxins, harmful bacteria and inflammatory compounds in the gut, letting them pass through and out rather than being absorbed across the gut wall. It's inert, unabsorbed, and has been used in European animal nutrition for decades.
Putting it together
The five pieces do different jobs on different timescales: the clay gives you relief within a day or two, the pumpkin soothes within days, the prebiotics feed an established microbiome within a week, the probiotics establish in 2–3 weeks, and the postbiotics give you the benefits of a mature microbiome in parallel. If you've tried probiotic-only supplements and been disappointed, this is probably why — a microbiome isn't a single species, and a supplement shouldn't be either.
One thing to note
Biome Balance shouldn't be given at the same time as macrolide antibiotics (like erythromycin or azithromycin). If your dog is on any prescription medication, have a quick chat with your vet before adding any supplement to their bowl.
